The art of reflection part 2

After creating my first sculpture of my collection, I had all this scraps clay after carving the texture on my self-sculpture. As i was collecting them, throughout the carving process and debating about reclaiming them in water. I decided to used them for my second sculpture to symbolize vulnerability

I started to contemplate which sculpture would need a big representation of vulnerability.

One of the biggest characteristics became the symbolization of vulnerability.

This sculpture was started by creating a slab pieces that was formed in a plaster mold to create a dome that would be the vase of the sculpture. Once the dome was sctructurally sound, i started to add carved pieces joining them together to start developing a flower.

This sculpture started representing my friend who is a mischievous soul, open to exploration yet vulnerable in many ways. At times, she feels anger toward herself for not recognizing her own worth, even though her strength is clear in her refusal to shut herself off, no matter how difficult that can be. She is a fighter, someone who would give her friends the clothes off her back—loyal and trustworthy to a fault. Though she’s built many walls to shield her vulnerability and faces obstacles that make it hard for others to truly know her, once she lets someone in, those same walls become their protection. She may, at times, be forgetful or not fully understand, but her true strength lies in her determination to be better—not for others, but for herself.

By using this scraps to create the center flower that symbolized her vulnerability, it was with the intention to demonstrate how, we shouldn’t discard out vulnerable side as not important, or discarded as a weakness when, it is our greatest strength.

having my friend in my life has helped me realize that I should not try to keep everything bottled up and that its okey to cry, that it the way my body helps me deal with moments in my life.

For this sculpture to be complete I had to create tentacle forms that would grow out of the vase, this tentacles were built through slab coils.

They were created to be positioned, in different directions and movement, I created one that was looking to ward the flowers, symbolizing judgement, one looking outward symbolizing the curiosity that my friend has about the world, and nature. Each tentacle that surrounds the flower, is meant to be the protectors and the barriers for outsiders, to get to know her. Each tentacle had carved texture that created holes that can sometimes be a reason for people to not try to get to know her or to look behind first impressions.
